Today, the Austrian Archducal Hat is kept around 15 kilometers from the gates of Vienna. It is kept in the Augustinian monastery of Klosterneuburg. It is regarded as a symbol of the unity of the Austrian hereditary lands. It is completely unknown who made the hat and where.
All the better known is the engraver of the coin who dedicated himself to this special insignia: Helmut Andexlinger. The multi-award-winning artist designed both sides of the second golden gem in the "Crowns of the Habsburgs" series.
In 1616, the archducal hat was endowed as the "Austrian crown" and could only be removed from Klosterneuburg Abbey on the occasion of the transfer of power to a new ruler. Such a transfer of power is depicted on the second side of the coin with the hereditary homage procession on the Graben in Vienna. The archducal hat, beautifully depicted on the first side of the coin, was considered a "holy crown" alongside the Hungarian crown of St. Stephen and the Bohemian crown of Wenceslas.
