Klimt and his women

Klimt's work may have provoked scandals; beyond all doubt, the monumental painting "The Kiss" (1908/09) has always stood out. With it, Klimt sets a monument to the idea of gentle love; and it signifies a confession. As art historian Alice Strobl has proven on the basis of a drawing in Klimt's sketchbook from 1917, the female figure in the painting refers to Emilie Flöge. Flöge was Klimt's lover for a very short time, but much longer his life person. The painting does not show a pair of lovers in erotic entanglement; rather, it expresses intimacy and understanding and radiates a special gentleness.
