In 2005, Austria is honoring the composer and pianist Ludwig van Beethoven with a 50 euro commemorative coin made of fine gold (986/1000), minted in the highest minting quality "proof" (PP). Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn around December 17, 1770. He began music lessons when he was 11 years old. In 1792 he moved to Vienna, where he took further music lessons from Joseph Haydn, among others. In 1795, Beethoven made his first appearance as a pianist with his own compositions. His legacy of nine symphonies, five piano concertos, 16 string quartets, 32 piano sonatas (e.g. the "Moonlight Sonata"), as well as the opera "Fidelio" and two masses, made him a central figure in classical music. In 1795, he began to suffer from severe hearing loss, which developed into complete deafness by 1819. Nevertheless, Ludwig van Beethoven remained active as a pianist and composer until his death in Vienna on March 26, 1827.
