This special gold coin was minted between 1907 and 1933 and is named after the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The coin shows the American goddess of freedom "Lady Liberty" on the obverse and a flying bald eagle in high relief on the reverse.
An interesting fact: the staff at the mint in Philadelphia were aware of the difficulties involved in minting a high relief, but had to produce a few test pieces at President Roosevelt's insistence. The exact number is not known; figures vary between 19 and 24. As expected, the production of the test pieces proved to be very problematic. The coins had to be struck twelve more times until all the details were visible.
The coin is available in various vintages.
