Silver price development and current price

Our silver chart shows you the current silver prices in euros and the development of the silver price over time. This silver spot reflects the current silver price on the international market. Silver has been traded on the major precious metal markets for centuries. While the London silver fixing used to be the basis for silver trading, today the silver spot, which is updated every second and corresponds to the current market price, is used.

Silver prices in buying & selling

If you want to buy silver in Austria or sell silver in the form of investment silver (silver coins & silver bars) or old silver (silver jewelry, silverware,...), the prices of dealers are based on this general silver price.

However, the current prices for silver coins, silver bars and used silver/broken silver differ both when buying and selling silver, because in addition to the silver price per troy ounce, production and manufacturing costs as well as melting and recycling costs must also be factored into the prices.

If you want to buy physical silver, you must also bear in mind that, unlike investment gold, investment silver is subject to VAT. While gold is completely exempt from VAT in Austria and the EU, silver is subject to a special form of VAT: Differential taxation. In the case of goods for which VAT has already been paid, the VAT to be paid is not applied to the total price, but only to the difference between the purchase and sales price of the goods, i.e. the dealer's margin. However, it always depends on the silver product in question whether it can be sold with differential taxation.

The London world market price for silver

While silver derivatives and futures are mainly traded in New York, Chicago and Tokyo, the physical commodity silver is traded on the precious metal markets in London, New York and Zurich. The largest marketplace for silver bars is undoubtedly London, where the global market price for silver - in US dollars per ounce - is also determined daily on the London Bullion Market. In contrast to the gold market, there is no longer any silver fixing, which determines the daily price of silver at a certain time. Only the current silver spot price serves as a guide. Because silver, like most other commodities, is traded in US dollars, monetary policy naturally plays a key role - as it does with the gold price. For us in Europe, the relationship between the US dollar and the euro is of course the most important factor.
