Investing in gold: better bars or coins?

The question of whether gold bars or gold coins are better for investing money is not so easy to answer across the board. Not every denomination is equally interesting for everyone, and the cheapest price is not always the most favorable for you.

Which specific gold products make sense in which denomination always depends on the individual situation of the buyer: How much money should be invested? What proportion of the assets should be invested in gold and precious metals? How do you assess your own future situation? ...

Denomination decisive

Basically, the smaller the denomination, the higher the cost of buying gold. After all, the cost of producing a 1/10 ounce coin hardly differs from that of a 1/1 ounce coin. Proportional to the material value, the percentage costs are therefore naturally higher for small pieces.

Therefore, it is always cheaper to buy one 1/1 ounce coin instead of ten 1/10 ounce coins.

However, smaller denominations have the advantage that you can sell individual pieces of your gold if necessary. Only as much as you really need. If, on the other hand, you only have one larger gold bar, it is difficult to divide.

Gold bars or gold coins? Which is better?

Gold bars are generally easier to produce than coins, which is why the premium is usually lower for bars than for coins. If you want to buy 1 ounce of gold, it is therefore always cheaper to buy a gold bar than a coin.

Because the denomination is also relevant and gold bars are available in larger units, it is certainly worth investing in bars from a certain investment amount.

In terms of tradability, common bullion coins (Vienna Philharmonic, Maple Leaf, ...) and good gold bars are no different.

At this point, good gold bars means bars that are bankable worldwide. These are bars from manufacturers that are listed as members of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) in the Good Delivery List and also produce the 400 oz standard bars for bank trading.

All gold bars that you can buy from Gold & Co are made by manufacturers with LBMA certification. Specifically, these are gold bars from the Austrian Mint and bars from the Swiss refinery Argor-Heraeus (AH also produces MÖ bars) as well as bars from the German refinery C.Hafner.

Bars from manufacturers without an LBMA certificate are often not purchased at all by banks and only at high discounts by precious metal dealers.

Safe gold bars

Buying gold bars from LMBA-certified manufacturers not only gives you the security of purchasing a high-quality bar, it also makes counterfeiting of these products much more difficult and less common.

Argor-Heraeus is the only refinery in the world to issue "Kinebars", gold bars with an additional security feature in the form of an applied kinegram. The gold bars from C.Hafner are issued in special "CertiCard" packaging with an integrated certificate that is difficult to counterfeit.

In addition, C.Hafner ingots have a unique surface structure that makes any unnoticed, subsequent manipulation impossible.

Which gold coins come into question

In the case of gold coins, it should be noted that not every coin is equally suitable for investment. A distinction is made between collector coins and bullion coins. The latter are explicitly issued as investment coins, the price is made up of the pure material value and a small premium for the minting. The best gold coins for beginners are coins that are as well-known as possible and therefore widely accepted.
