A coin from the old roof of the Parliament - The new 5-euro silver coin "Democracy
A strong democracy thrives on discourse. Our opinions may differ, but our consensus is called democracy. Likewise, fundamental rights and freedoms are what make a democracy what it is. They enable individual and social freedom and guarantee the co-determination of the individual.
Moreover, the coin gives an answer to what our nation was born from: from the spirit that is reflected in the constitution. There it says: "Austria is a democratic republic. Its law emanates from the people." In other words: democracy, that's what we all are.
As with the previous Austrian 5-euro coins, the nine national coats of arms are arranged in a circle on the value side of the nine-sided parliamentary coin. The other side shows centrally two heads in profile and one en face. These figures represent the totality of the people as sovereign. In the left half of the coin's motif, one sees a watchful eye surrounded by stylized laurel leaves. In the right background you can see a section of the Austrian parliament building. In the upper area of the Democracy coin and deepened in the relief is read: "Austria is a democratic republic." In the lower left area is the continuation of the text: "Your right emanates from the people." This is Article 1 of the Austrian Federal Constitutional Law (B-VG).
