750 gold: jewelry with 18 carat

750 gold is the classic alloy for high-quality gold jewelry. Because pure gold is too soft a material for jewelry production, it is always alloyed with other metals by the goldsmith. Unlike gold bars or investment gold coins, jewelry therefore always consists of an alloy, i.e. a mixture of different metals that are melted together. The admixed metals are intended to make the gold jewelry harder, more dimensionally stable, and more scratch-resistant.

The proportion of pure gold in an alloy can be expressed both in parts per thousand and in carats. Both units describe the same and can be converted accordingly. The fineness of 750‰ thousand parts corresponds to a carat number of 18 carats.

750 jewelry gold is available in a wide range of colors, for example as white gold, yellow gold, or red gold, depending on the metal used in the alloy, such as copper, silver, or platinum. However, a piece of jewelry with 18 carat always consists of 75.0% pure gold.

Check fineness: 750 gold = 18 carat

In gold jewelry, the fineness is usually stamped in the form of a hallmark. In the case of rings, such a hallmark is usually found on the inside, while in the case of chains or pendants it is usually found on the clasp. This can be both the karat number, such as "18 kt." (more rarely "18k" or "18c") as well as the fineness in thousand parts, such as "750".

To check the correctness of the information, the acid test, also called line test, is used in the gold purchase. The gold piece to be tested is rubbed on a slate, which serves as a "touchstone", so that a clear line remains. Various assay acids are then applied one after the other to this fine test line. Each alloy has its own test acid, e.g. one for 18 carats, one for 14 carats, etc., each consisting of a specific mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid (aqua regia).

If the abrasion on the touchstone twists or discolors, the alloy is below the tested fineness; if the line remains unchanged under the respective acid effect, the gold content corresponds to the respective karat activity.
