In 2020, the Salzburg Festival celebrated its 100th anniversary after Max Reinhardt staged Jedermann for the first time on Salzburg's Cathedral Square in August 1920. One hundred years later, the festival in the city of Mozart is the most important festival of classical music and performing arts.
To celebrate the anniversary, the Austrian Mint is now issuing the anniversary coin "100 Years of the Salzburg Festival" with a face value of 20 euros as a collector coin in silver. The silver coin was sold out at the Austrian Mint shortly after the first issue date of the collector's coin on January 22, 2020.
Two masks adorn the inside of the lapel, representing the two basic forms of drama: The modern, stylized mask on the left stands for tragedy, while the classical-looking mask on the right embodies comedy.
The obverse also features stylized masks, as well as a cut-out of a violin and a dove of peace with an olive branch in its beak on the right edge of the coin. Parts of the edge are backed with red paint.
Special plate embossing
However, the special feature of this silver coin is certainly its shape. The coin is not flat, but minted in a new type of "plate minting". If you look at the concave obverse, it looks like a plate, while the convex reverse stands out.
