In 2020, the Salzburg Festival celebrated its 100th anniversary after Max Reinhardt staged Jedermann for the first time on Salzburg's Domplatz in August 1920. One hundred years later, the Festival in the City of Mozart is the most important festival of classical music and performing arts.
To celebrate the anniversary, the Austrian Mint is now issuing the anniversary coin "100 Years of the Salzburg Festival" with a face value of 20 euros as a collector coin in silver. Already shortly after the first issue date of the collector coin on 22 January 2020, the silver coin was sold out at the Austrian Mint.
The inner part of the lapel is decorated with two masks, which are supposed to represent the two basic forms of drama: The modern stylized mask on the left represents tragedy, while the classical-looking mask on the right embodies comedy.
Also on the obverse are stylized masks, but also the cutout of a violin and on the right edge of the coin a dove of peace with an olive branch in its beak. In addition, parts of the rim are backed with red paint.
Special plate embossing
But the distinctive feature of this silver coin is certainly its shape. The coin is not flat, but minted in a novel "plate minting". If you look at the concave obverse side, you look as if into a plate, the convex reverse, however, stands out.
