To celebrate the turn of the year, the Austrian Mint has been issuing a silver New Year coin every year since 2011, which is often given as a New Year's gift and has since become a popular collector's item. The 2018 edition of the collector's coin was launched on December 5, 2017. Like all coins of the New Year series, it appears in the quality "hand lifted" in an illustrated blister with a face value of 5 euros.
On the obverse of the silver collector coin is placed the smiling lion with curly head. The motif comes from the magnificent binding of the Gospels of John of Troppau, which is considered the founding codex of the Austrian National Library. The binding contains the four Gospels, which were written entirely in gold, underlining the importance of the codex.
The value side of the nine-sided coin, with the alloy silver Ag 925, depicts the lettering: Republic of Austria as well as all the coats of arms of the nine provinces. In addition, the nominal value of 5 euros is engraved in the center.
