To celebrate the turn of the year, the Austrian Mint has issued a silver New Year's coin every year since 2011, which is often given as a New Year's gift and has since become a popular collector's item. The 2018 edition of the collector's coin was launched on December 5, 2017. Like all coins in the New Year's series, it is issued in "hand-struck" quality in an illustrated blister pack with a face value of 5 euros.
The smiling lion with a curly head is placed on the front of the silver collector's coin. The motif is taken from the magnificent binding of the Gospel Book of John of Troppau, which is considered the founding codex of the Austrian National Library. The cover contains the four gospels, which were written entirely in gold and emphasize the importance of the codex.
The value side of the nine-sided coin, made of silver Ag 925, shows the inscription: Republic of Austria and all the coats of arms of the nine federal states. The face value of 5 euros is also engraved in the center.
