The Kookaburra coin is a silver coin minted in Australia and comes from the Perth Mint. The obverse features the kookaburra - the largest kingfisher in the world. It is widespread in Australia. Its trademark is a distinctive voice reminiscent of laughter. There is a legend about it in Aboriginal mythology: It says that a god-like being commanded the kookaburra to laugh loudly at sunrise so that people would not miss the sunrise. The name "Kookaburra" comes from the language of the Australian aborigines.
2020: 30th anniversary of the Kookaburra silver coin
The obverse of the coin shows the current motif of 2020, a kookaburra sitting on a roof as the sun sets. The motif is framed by the words "Australian Kookaburra", "30th Anniversary" and the respective weight. The reverse is adorned with the motif of the first year of issue, 1990, and a miniature portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
