Buy platinum as an investment

The precious metal platinum, the name is derived from the Spanish term "Platina", was already discovered and processed in ancient Egypt. Today, the white precious metal is more in demand than ever and a popular alternative to gold and silver, which is often used to diversify a precious metal investment.

What makes platinum valuable?

Many people do not know that platinum is about 30 times rarer than gold. It is therefore one of the rarer investment precious metals. But if you look at the international trade, it quickly becomes clear that gold is still the undisputed leader of the precious metals.

Platinum investment: buy coins & bars as an investment?

Physical platinum is an excellent way to diversify your precious metal portfolio. If you want to buy platinum as an investment, you have the choice between bars or bullion coins.

In addition to the platinum philharmonic, the Canadian platinum Maple Leaf, the Australian platinum Koala coin or the American Platinum Eagle are popular platinum investments.
But how exactly do platinum bullion and coins differ as an investment? Bullion coins usually trade close to their material value. Nevertheless, there are rarer platinum coins, such as the Chinese platinum panda coins, which are highly sought after by collectors because they can score points with their variety of motifs, rarity and year of release. Over time, such a coin can become a collector's item and the value can increase accordingly.

In contrast, platinum bars are more of a practical investment and are usually cheaper to purchase than coins. There are also special forms such as table bars. We always recommend buying only platinum bars from Good Delivery production of LPPM-certified refiners.

When deciding whether to buy platinum coins or platinum bars, the tax situation also plays a role.

Value-added tax: Platinum not tax-free

Platinum, unlike gold, is not exempt from VAT. Therefore, when buying platinum, the VAT of 20% must be paid. For investors, this is a very relevant aspect, since the increase in value must be more than 20% to make überhautp return.

Apart from the usual VAT, however, there is an interesting form of alternative taxation: the so-called differential taxation. For products for which the full VAT has already been paid at the time of the first sale, VAT only has to be paid on the difference between the purchase price and the sales price when the product is resold. This is intended to prevent resold goods from being subject to the full VAT again. However, such differential taxation is generally only possible for platinum coins.

Thus, it is often possible to purchase platinum coins from the precious metal dealer also differentially taxed and thus save a part of VAT.For bars of platinum is always the full sales tax to pay.

For white metals, such as silver, platinum or palladium, which are all subject to VAT, there is also the possibility of storage in duty-free warehouses. As long as the goods remain in the bonded warehouse, VAT can be legally avoided. In addition, bonded warehouses are professionally secured and usually include insurance of the goods.

Realistically, however, a bonded warehouse is only suitable for large investors, as there is often a minimum floor for the investment amount. In addition, the accessibility and availability of one's own investment is of course problematic. We always recommend our customers to buy precious metals in physical form in order to always have immediate access to them.
