This silver coin is issued since 1982 by the Banco de Mexico at the mint Casa de Moneda. The special feature: It is the first modern silver bullion coin in the world. In 1991, the Mexican Mint also introduced the smaller denominations of 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce and 1/20 ounce. Another special feature of the Silver Libertad is that this silver coin has no minted face value, but it is still legal tender in Mexico. The respective current value results from the material value determined daily on the stock exchange and is calculated according to the fine weight of the national currency.
The design side of this silver coin features the coat of arms of Mexico. Unlike its fractional weight counterparts, the coin features the modern coat of arms design in the center of the motif. It is framed by a ring consisting of 10 historical versions of the coat of arms from the last 200 years. The value side shows the winged victorious goddess of Mexico, symbolizing Mexico's triumph over Spain in the War of Independence.
