In 2006, Austria is honoring "Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart", probably Austria's most important and most popular composer, with a 50 euro commemorative coin made of gold (986/1000). The coin is the third and final issue in the official "Great Composers" series.
The front view of the commemorative coin shows a portrait of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in a three-quarter view on the right-hand side. On the left side, slightly receding into the background, is his father Leopold Mozart. Both portraits are based on contemporary paintings. The inscription "LEOPOLD WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART 1756-1791" completes the motif. The reverse shows a view of the Getreidegasse in Salzburg. Mozart's birthplace can be seen to the left of the center. The neighboring houses are shown in strong perspective foreshortening. The right side of the coin is flanked by a house facade. The filigree motif is framed by an inscription.
