To mark the 150th birthday of Carl Auer von Welsbach, the Austrian Mint is dedicating its latest niobium coin to the Austrian pioneer of artificial light. The value side shows a lantern lighter maintaining a gas lantern. These lanterns were in use in Vienna from 1800 onwards.
The picture side:
On the second side, the sun shines as the source of light in the strong green niobium core. A portrait of Auer von Welsbach and various lamps for artificial light can also be seen. The brilliant chemist was born in Vienna in 1858 and invented the metal filament lamp and the flint in the lighter.
