The obverse of the silver coin features the kookaburra - the largest kingfisher in the world. It is widespread in Australia. Its trademark is a distinctive voice reminiscent of laughter. There is a legend about it in Aboriginal mythology: It says that a god-like being commanded the kookaburra to laugh loudly at sunrise so that people would not miss the sunrise. The name "Kookaburra" comes from the language of the Australian aborigines.

Year of minting, denomination and special feature

The Kookaburra silver coin first appeared in 1990, with a fineness of 99.9% silver and was initially only available in the 1 ounce version (31.1 grams). One year later, different versions of the Kookaburra coin were minted: Two ounces (62.2 grams), ten ounces (311 grams) and 1 kilogram (32.15 ounces). The Kookaburra coin has been available with a changing motif since 1993. One or two kingfishers are shown in alternating poses.

The Kookaburra coin from 2009 is a special edition: to mark the 20th anniversary, a set of 20 gold coins in proof quality was issued, which are contained in a valuable box. Proof quality stands for the highest minting quality.
