Dental gold & dental gold alloys

Dental gold often resembles first-class gold jewelry in its fusion. Such gold alloys can contain up to 90 % gold. Dental gold also contains other valuable metals such as silver, platinum, copper or zinc. These precious metal alloys give the dentures the necessary hardness. Pure gold would be far too soft for a dental prosthesis. However, precious metals not only provide the hardness, but also the surface density and strength of the inlay.

Dental gold is divided into four levels of hardness depending on its intended use. As the proportion of gold increases, the hardness decreases. Soft alloys are used for inlays and particularly hard alloys for dental bridges, denture frameworks and dentures.

Crowns cast from gold are often referred to as gold teeth. They are often used for the posterior teeth in the dentition but are also used for the front area of the teeth. In our part of the world, the use of gold in the front teeth is decreasing, but in many other cultures, gold teeth are a sign of wealth and power. In addition to gold teeth, there are also economy alloys. Here, the gold content is lower and the costs are lower. The gold content in economy alloys is replaced by the precious metals copper and silver. Visually, however, there is hardly any difference between economy gold and conventional gold teeth.
