"St. Gaudens Double Eagle | Various Vintages | Gold Coin" noted for sale.
To the purchase basket
This particular gold coin was minted between 1907 and 1933 and is named after sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The coin shows the American goddess of liberty "Lady Liberty" on the obverse, and a flying bald eagle in high relief on the reverse.
Exciting: The staff at the Philadelphia mint knew about the difficulties of minting a high relief, but at the insistence of President Roosevelt, they had to produce some trial specimens. The exact number is not known; indications vary from 19 to 24. As expected, the production of the proofs proved to be very problematic. The coins had to be struck twelve more times until all the details were visible.
The coin is available in various vintages.
