The six-part series "Rome on the Danube" brings a breath of fresh air to the ruins of the ancient Roman Empire in present-day Austria. The Virunum coin celebrates the capital of the former Roman province of Noricum.
The obverse of the coin shows Emperor Claudius in profile, with a Roman chariot being pulled by two horses in the background. The scene is taken from a tomb relief from Virunum, which can be seen today on the wall of the Maria Saal church in the neighboring municipality. The second side was designed by engravers from Münze Österreich AG with a Roman basilica, a horse-drawn chariot and a blacksmith making swords.
The coin is sold including a beautiful box and certificate of authenticity.
