She was a pioneer in a male domain, a pioneer of humane architecture and a courageous resistance fighter against National Socialism. This gold coin from the "Home of Great Daughters" series honors her extraordinary life's work and her unwavering strength. Born in Vienna in 1897, she made history as one of the first women to study architecture at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna . Her most famous innovation, the Frankfurt Kitchen, is still regarded today as the prototype of the modern fitted kitchen - a functional design that revolutionized housework. Schütte-Lihotzky led a life full of milestones: She was the only woman to contribute to the design of the Hietzing Werkbund Estate, campaigned for decent housing and showed unprecedented courage in resisting the Nazi regime, something she almost paid for with her life. After 1945, the Adolf Loos student dedicated herself to the peace and women's movements, reconstruction and the promotion of social architecture. Her commitment was recognized with numerous awards, including the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art.
The coin images
The value side shows a portrait of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky in front of a stylized floor plan - a symbol of her visionary architecture. The image side pays tribute to her greatest achievements in the style of a collage: The "Frankfurt Kitchen", the Hietzinger Werkbund Estate in Vienna and a freely designed portrait showing her as a young, self-confident architect. Her gaze radiates the strength and determination that characterized her throughout her life. She looks at us confidently and straightforwardly.
